Ep 003: The Midlife Funk – How to Escape “The Beige”
Ep 003: The Midlife Funk: How to Escape “The Beige”
Your life isn’t broken. Someone just dimmed the lights and forgot to turn them back up.
You drive all the way home and can’t remember the last fifteen minutes. That’s autopilot – and a lot of us are living our whole forty-something lives like that. Present, but the you part has gone offline. Nothing feels energising. Even the things you used to love feel flat. Not awful, not amazing. Just beige.
Here’s the reframe: that funk isn’t a breakdown, it’s a signal. It’s your system pulling the emergency brake because you’ve outgrown the life you spent twenty years building. A red light, not a dead end. This episode is what the funk actually is, why it ambushes you in midlife, and six ways to shift out of it – without overhauling your entire life.
In This Episode:
- The Juggle Struggle — how being the human band-aid for everyone’s emergencies leaves zero creative juice for you (a dozen people’s needs queued in your brain, none of them yours)
- What the funk really is: a circuit breaker, not a character flaw – and the honest difference between a funk and clinical depression
- Why it hits in midlife: body and brain maxed out, identity blurring, drowning under “shoulds”
- 6 ways to shift out of the funk: sort the basics, switch the scenery, declutter your shoulds, move like you’re 10 again, give yourself a joy jolt, schedule something delicious
- Why you already know what you need to do – and the real question is why you haven’t done it yet
Your Prime Power Move:
Write down 5 tiny actions that genuinely give you a lift (skip the fence-jumping — long story). Not candle-staring or self-hugging. Real ones: scrolling a real estate app for houses you’ll never buy, one trashy 90s song at antisocial volume in the car, the absurdly expensive coffee just because you like the cup. Whatever floats your boat. Stick the menu on your fridge or phone. Next time the funk hits, don’t overthink it – place the order.
Your Next Step:

A quick note:
A funk is that muted, misaligned, uninspired feeling – and it’s fixable. But if what you’re feeling is heavy, persistent, and you can’t see a way through, that’s worth taking seriously. Please reach out to a doctor or mental health professional. (This is a sensitive area – if you or someone you know is struggling, I’m glad to help point you toward the right support.)
