Ep 016: Why ‘Follow Your Passion’ is Terrible Midlife Advice
You haven’t lost your passion. You’ve lost touch with yourself – and “just follow it” was never going to help you find her.
“Follow your passion” isn’t bad advice because passion is bad. It’s bad advice because it assumes you already know what yours is, and that finding it will hand you the rest of your life on a plate. Melissa unpacks why passion usually develops after you start rather than before it (backed by genuine research on why the opposite belief makes people quit the moment things get hard), why passion doesn’t have to become your job, and why the real question was never “what’s my passion” at all.
In This Episode:
- Why “passion” gets treated like a soulmate – and why that’s the whole problem
- The research on why believing passion is “found” makes people give up faster when it gets difficult
- The difference between quitting too soon and genuinely outgrowing something
- Why turning a hobby into a business might be the fastest way to kill it
- Why “follow your passion” is lovely inspiration and useless instruction
- The reframed question to ask instead of “what’s my passion”
Your Prime Power Move:
Drop the question “what’s my passion.” Ask this instead: what makes me feel more like me? Notice when you lose track of time, what you talk about without being asked, and what you do when nobody’s watching, rewarding you, or even noticing.
