The Confidence Myth That’s Keeping You Stuck (And What Actually Works)

I was in a coffee shop last week when I overheard two women talking. One said to the other, “I used to be so confident in my thirties. I don’t know what happened to that person.”

I knew exactly what happened to that person. I’d watched it happen to me too.

For me, it started with small things. I stopped wearing bright colours because I thought they made me look like I was trying too hard. I’d rehearse what I wanted to say in meetings three times in my head before speaking up, and then usually decide it wasn’t worth saying. I started every request with “Sorry to bother you, but…”

When did apologising for existing become my default setting?

Here’s the myth keeping you stuck: you think confidence is a personality trait you either have or don’t have.

You look at women who seem naturally confident and think, “I’m just not built that way.”

Wrong. Confidence isn’t fixed. It’s a skill you build through action, one you can rebuild even if you haven’t felt it in years.

You can’t think your way back to confidence; you have to act your way back to it.

What actually happened to your confidence

Midlife doesn’t help. Youth culture tells you you’ve aged out of relevance. Your roles are shifting faster than your sense of self can keep up. Your body’s rewriting its own rules without checking with you first. Any one of those would rattle a person. All three at once isn’t a character flaw, it’s a system overload.

Here’s what actually happened: you started hiding. Not consciously. Year after year, you made yourself a little smaller. You swallowed opinions to avoid being “difficult.” You told yourself your needs could wait. You made yourself forgettable to avoid being judged.

Society worships youth. You internalise “I’m becoming irrelevant.” You second-guess yourself. You stop speaking up. You apologise for taking up space. The cycle deepens.

The confidence didn’t disappear. You buried it. And rebuilding it isn’t about finding some new version of yourself, it’s about letting the woman who’s always been there get seen again.

The real truth about confidence

That woman who walks into every room like she owns it? She wasn’t born that way.

There’s real psychology behind why. Psychologist Albert Bandura spent decades studying where self-belief actually comes from, and the biggest driver wasn’t positive thinking or a pep talk. It was doing the hard thing and proving to yourself you could. Actual proof beats affirmations every time.

Before I tell you what works, here’s what didn’t work for me.

Affirmations didn’t. I stood in front of the mirror saying “I am confident, I am strong, I can do anything I set my mind to” more times than I can count, and felt like a fraud every single time.

Waiting didn’t either. I kept thinking “once I lose 10 kilos, once my website’s perfect, once I feel ready, then I’ll be confident.” Confidence doesn’t show up when you’re ready. It shows up when you act anyway.

4 ways to start rebuilding your confidence today

Once you stop performing someone you’re not, confidence starts to follow on its own.

1. Stop hiding behind perfection, start showing up imperfectly

My first micro-win: I stopped saying “sorry to bother you” in emails. Every time I typed it, I deleted it and hit send anyway. Terrifying for about two days. Then it just became normal.

Choose yours for this week:

  • Share your opinion in a meeting, even if your voice shakes
  • Ask for what you need, no justifying, no over-explaining
  • Stop apologising for things that don’t need an apology

Each small win tells your brain: I can handle this.

2. Stop hiding behind comparison, start focusing on your own path

If you’re constantly consuming content that makes you feel “less than,” your confidence doesn’t stand a chance.

Be ruthless about what you let into your headspace. Unfollow accounts that trigger comparison. Step away from conversations that drain you. Stop reading “anti-aging” articles that make you feel like you’re falling apart.

Midlife isn’t a race to the finish, and you’re not behind on some imaginary timeline. You’re exactly where you need to be for your life.

3. Stop hiding your capabilities, start owning what you’re good at

When confidence dips, we forget what we’re good at.

Take 10 minutes right now and write down three achievements you’re genuinely proud of, skills you’ve built over the years, and challenges you’ve already survived.

Keep the list handy. When self-doubt creeps in, read it back.

4. Stop hiding behind martyrdom, start prioritising yourself

Confidence and energy are directly linked. When you’re running yourself ragged looking after everyone else, you’ve got nothing left for you. That’s not noble, that’s martyrdom, and it kills confidence.

Make the basics non-negotiable: sleep, movement, one small thing each day that’s purely for you. When you feel physically better, confident action gets a lot easier.

Your 10% stretch challenge

Choose one action this week that pushes you outside your comfort zone, not by a lot. Just 10%.

Not a tiny, invisible gesture. And definitely not a quit-your-job-tomorrow leap. Somewhere right in the middle: enough to feel your pulse tick up, but not enough to lose sleep over.

Do it. Then pay attention to what happens next.

Your brain will try to shrink it down to nothing: “that was no big deal.” Don’t let it. Your confidence grows every time you prove to yourself you can do the uncomfortable thing.

That confident woman you used to be didn’t disappear. She got crowded out, buried under years of editing your opinions down and managing everyone else’s comfort at the expense of your own.

Rebuilding confidence isn’t an act of discovery. It’s an act of excavation.

Stop overthinking the room. Start taking the action. The confidence follows.
